Cheers and Thank You!

Believe it or not, Holmes Murphy is celebrating 85 years of serving our clients this year. I know, I know…we aren’t your typical 85-year-old…we try our best not to act our age. However, one thing remains constant throughout all our years and future aspirations…we remain true to our privately-held roots, doing what we know best, and helping our clients celebrate their successes along the way. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your birthdays, anniversaries, and all … [Read more...]

What Do Unclear Expectations Get You?

I’m not certain where I heard this quote, but it has always stayed with me — “The source of the world’s frustration is unclear expectations.”  In business, life, or leisure, I find these words to be true. In fact, it doesn’t matter which side of the table you sit on…whether you’re the one delivering or receiving…unclear expectations are the ultimate creator of frustration. Imagine, if you will, you’re headed to your favorite restaurant. This restaurant always delivers great food and great … [Read more...]

What Does Your Brand Say About You?

Have you ever played “The Voting Game”? It’s a party game where you anonymously vote on which player is described by each card drawn. Lots of laughs ensue when the results of each vote are revealed. Playing that game is the quickest way to learn the personal brand you’ve created. Game cards include topics like Most Likely to Show Up to Your High School Reunion in a Rented Lamborghini or Most Likely to be Called When a Friend Gets Thrown in Jail or Most Likely to Positively Change the World. So, … [Read more...]

Honing Your Craft

I recently had the opportunity to see Sally Field perform the lead role in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie on Broadway. Before the show began, my husband and I talked about the many roles Ms. Field has played over the years — “The Flying Nun,” “Gidget,” “Norma Rae,” “Sybil,” and “Doris”…to name a few. It was fun to remember the quirky and compelling characters that made her famous. Then we sat back and watched her masterful performance in this timeless play. Watching Ms. Field become … [Read more...]

Just Be…Be Present

As you read this blog, how present are you? No really…how aware are you of your surroundings now and throughout the day? On your way to work, did you observe the scenery or landmarks during your drive? Do you recall if you washed your hair during your shower this morning? How did your shampoo smell? Have you been paying attention to the room you are in? What’s the temperature? What are you sitting on? Is it comfortable? There are so many things going on right now, right here, in the present — … [Read more...]

Uncertain Times Call for Leaders to Step Up

If you turn on the news, take a look at social media, or listen to conversations from those around you, you’ll likely notice the discord. It’s evident we’re in pretty turbulent times right now…with tensions running high. Our country seems to be on edge, and there’s divisiveness everywhere I look. Let’s be clear, I’m not going to make this a political post. To me, it doesn’t matter which “side” you’re on. What I am going to talk about is leadership, and how now, more than ever, we all need to be … [Read more...]

Challenging the Norm: Salads A to Z

One summer when I was growing up, my mom received an issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine that held a treasure — an article titled “Salads A to Z.” Sure enough, there were 26 salad recipes that spanned the alphabet. Mom was determined to try them all. I don’t remember the specific salads we ate that summer, but I do remember how she went to multiple grocery stores looking for exotic ingredients that were sometimes difficult to find in western New York. But, she did it. In one summer, we … [Read more...]

Oh What a Year!

I’ve heard this said repeatedly over the last several days, “It doesn’t seem possible it’s mid-December!” This may be in part because where I’m at (in Des Moines, Iowa) we didn’t really have any measurable snow (or snow that stuck to the ground for more than 24 hours) until this past weekend. That alone is crazy. But it may also be due in part to the fact that this past year seems like it flew by at supersonic speed…and so much has happened. I can’t possibly address it all, but there are some … [Read more...]
