Walk This Way

I like smart people — folks who spend years and years becoming experts in their chosen field. It’s especially appealing if they are, as I like to say, Switzerland, i.e. neutral. If they don’t have a book to sell, a product to push, or an axe to grind, then I find it all the more impressive. Catrine Tudor-Locke is Switzerland! Dr. Tudor-Locke is a Researcher, Professor, and Department Chair of the Physical Activity and Health Lab at the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the … [Read more...]

Don’t Die from Embarrassment!

Every now and then, if you’re really fortunate, you get to meet someone like Phil Lawler. Phil was special. He was one of those individuals who make you think, “Wow, how blessed I am to count this incredible man as my friend!” I met Phil in the early 2000s when I was hosting a nationally syndicated radio program that focused on health and fitness. He became a regular guest because of his contagious positive energy and passion. Even over the radio, you could tell he had been put on this earth for … [Read more...]

Here Comes the Tsunami!

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. Mark Twain often gets credit for that statement; although, it most likely originated in England in the late 1800s. Regardless, the takeaway is simple — statistics can often be manipulated to support or detract from just about any position or argument. A major exception to that would be diabetes. It’s impossible to ignore how quickly the numbers are climbing. This is American Heart month. I’m sure by now you once again have been … [Read more...]

That’s Just Nuts!

One of my favorite expressions is that “Food is Fuel.” Just like a car needs gasoline to run, humans need food to live — not just to breathe, but to flourish. The quantity of food is obviously important, but so is the quality. I believe many of us overlook the importance of the quality of our diet. In terms of quantity, we measure gasoline in gallons and we measure food in calories. We require a certain amount of calories every day just to satisfy our basic needs, such as keeping our … [Read more...]

Let’s Talk About Habits

OK…time for some personal questions. Don’t worry … no one has to know the answers other than you. How many hours has it been since you last brushed your teeth? In the last 10 times you rode in a car, how many times did you wear your seatbelt? How many days has it been since you exercised for at least 30 minutes? I’m fairly confident your answer for No. 1 is somewhere less than 24 hours and for No. 2 you answered “10.” Now how about No. 3 — the dreaded “E” word? When was the last time you … [Read more...]

Chicken Little Was Right!

When it comes to the health of our country, Chicken Little was right…the sky IS falling! While healthcare and the Affordable Care Act have dominated the headlines over the last few years…and continue to do so…it seems that actual health gets very little attention. In June 2014, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) released statistics regarding the rate of diabetes in the United States. These same statistics can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) website as an … [Read more...]
